Guru Poornima – Day of Great-Fullness

HH Sri Sri Ravishankar

 ध्यानमूलं गुरुर्मूर्तिः पूजामूलं गुरुर्पदम् ।

मन्त्रमूलं गुरुर्वाक्यं मोक्षमूलं गुरूर्कृपा ॥

Dhyana Moolam Guru Murti, Puja Moolam Gurur Padam,
Mantra Moolam Gurur Vakyam, Moksha Moolam Guru Kripa

The very form of Guru is the root of Meditation, Guru’s feet, the root of worship. Guru’s words forms the root of Mantras and Grace of Guru the root of Liberation ,says Sage Vyasa

Today, July 3rd 2012 is Purnima, the full-moon day in the month of Ashada, the fourth month in the traditional Lunar Hindu Calendar observed as Guru Purnima. This day is dedicated to Maharishi Ved Vyasa, who has rendered invaluable service to Humankind by writing down four Vedas, Eighteen Puranas, the Mahabharata and Bhagavata.

The Supreme knowledge that was being passed on orally from the memory of the great Masters was for the first time compiled and written down by Maharishi Ved Vyasa. He had retired to a secluded place, inaccessible even to his closest disciples, and entered into deepest possible state of meditation. From that space of consciousness, he wrote down the great teachings of the Saints of yesteryugas. After recording the Supreme Knowledge on Bhoja Patra (Birch Tree bark and leaves), Maharishi Ved Vyas emerged out and appeared to his disciples on this auspicious day of Ashada Purnima. Hence, this day is dedicated and celebrated by Spiritual Seekers as Vyasa Purnima.

The greatest form of gratitude any Sadhak (spiritual seeker) can offer to a Master is by constantly studying and practising the teachings of such enlightened souls.

His Holiness Pujya Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar ji Founder of The Art of Living Foundation says,

Guru Purnima is the day when the disciple wakes up in his fullness and in the wakefulness he can’t be but grateful. This gratitude is not of dwaita (you and me), but of advaita. It is not a river moving from somewhere to somewhere, but is the ocean moving within itself. So, gratefulness on Guru-Purnima symbolizes that fullness.

For a seeker, Guru Purnima is a day of significance, is a day of New Year. It is the day to review one’s progress on the spiritual path and renew one’s determination and focus on the goal, and to resolve what one wants to do in the coming year. As the full moon rises and sets, tears of gratitude arise and repose into the vastness of one’s own self.”

As Saint Kabir says:

Guru dhobi Shisha kapada,sabuna sirjana hara;

surati sila para dhoikai, nikasai joti apara.

Master is the washer man, disciple the garment, and Creator Himself is the soap; when the clothes are beaten on the stone of divine reflection, they shine out bright and clean.

Sri Guru Gita describes Guru as follows

गुकारस्त्वन्धकारश्च रुकारस्तेज उच्यते ।

अज्ञानग्रासकं ब्रह्म गुरुरेव न संशयः ॥

Guru is that which leads from darkness to light represents Guru. Gu – Darkness and Ru = Light. Guru thus is one who dispels darkness of ignorance with luminescence of Knowledge.

Gu refers to ‘guna teetha’, which means ‘beyond attribute’, i.e with any Gunas (qualities, characteristics, attributes, tendencies or traits). A classic example for understanding this was given by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar.

Electricity when supplied to a fan results in breeze, when supplied to a motor results in rotation, when supplied to a bulb results in light, when provided to a stove results in heat and when provided to air-conditioner results in chillness. Can we now call electricity as breeze, heat, chillness or light? No way.

If you call Electricity as heat, the Refrigerator may not concur and if you call it light, the Fan may not concur. While Electricity is in all these appliances, the reverse is not true – the appliances are not in Electricity. It is the same with Guru tatva (Principle). It is present in all the attributes and yet is beyond the attributes – “Guna teeta”

Today is the day, when we express our gratitude to all the Masters of the past, present and the future ones – who walked this planet. Not Master in HIS physical form but the Guru Principle that transcends the form.

Skepticism to Spirituality: A Journey Beyond Logic

As world celebrated surviving Y2K bug my own internal operating system was locked in rigid grid.

It was year 2000. Technology was new religion. As young software engineer in India’s booming IT corridor my world was governed entirely by laws of logic data points and C++ syntax. If I could not test it measure it or debug it then it did not exist. I wore my skepticism like badge of honor.

To me anyone who traded in intangible especially traditional Indian gurus with flowing beards and long hair was selling nothing but beautifully packaged placebo. When I met Guruji first time in the Institute in Bombay, that was my justification. I don’t believe in the psuedo stuff like spirtuality and Art of living programs was not for me. But something at the remotest back of my mind left some impression on me. This man was something. His level of acceptance of my point of view was something totally unexpected and that with his trademark smile. He simply said, everything has its time, just like the science that you believe so much in. We will meet again soon in Bangalore.

I considered my mindset scientific which itself was myth used as shield against anything my intellect could not immediately categorize. Then relentless pace of new millennium caught up with me. Thrill of coding for global clients quickly translated into burnt out nights caffeine addiction and mind that refused to shut down.

My entry into Art of Living Basic course was complete accident. My then boss had just qualified as Art of Living teacher. Out of mix of corporate courtesy and mild pressure I found myself sitting in that hall. My arms were crossed as classic engineer waiting for logic to fail. What kept me from walking out however was unique draw of those early days. Last two days of program were taught by Guruji himself.

Before he even arrived I was introduced to breathing technique called Sudarshan Kriya. I expected esoteric philosophy but what I got felt remarkably like hard system reset. It was not about blind faith. It was experiential process. For first time in years relentless mental chatter stopped. There was no argument to be made because data was right there in my own nervous system. Then came final two days and I met Guruji Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in person for first time. I had prepared myself to be completely unimpressed once again but with much more open mind. I still expected grandiosity that my skeptical mind always associated with spiritual figures. But when he walked into room to teach us there was no heavy air of self importance. There was just lightness effortless presence and genuine sense of joy that felt entirely grounded. When I looked at him my rigid definitions began to crumble.

He was not demanding my belief or asking me to abandon my intellect. He was simply offering different way to experience life. I realized then that true science is about exploration not dismissal. Restricting my worldview only to what I could measure on monitor was least scientific thing I could do. I had entered that space as born skeptic locked in digital grid of year 2000. I walked out as someone willing to explore vastness beyond numbers. I am still engineer. I still love logic mechanics and data. But now I also understand mechanics of breath logic of silence and profound science of simply letting go.

What I learnt that day was how hollow the so-called science itself was. I realised science as we come to believe was restricted to knowledge of that time and that truth was never constant. Plastic at one time was considered a boon to mankind just as Anti-biotic was. Chemical Fertilisers was supposed to eradicate hunger from the world. Looking back everything was true at that time, but truth changed when world discovered the ill-effects or better options. But Spirituality was eternal science. True always, in every context and at all times.
