Divine Dermatologist – Maddur Vaidyanathapura Sri Vaidyanatheshwara Temple

On a personal visit for a Upanayana Function in Mysuru, we decided to explore some Devalayas enroute and what we discovered was far more than what we had bargained for. Sri Vaidyanatheshwara Gudi

The temple about 10 minutes drive (4 kms) from Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway and is located in Vaidyanathapura, Maddur (80 kms from Bengaluru & about 65km from Mysuru). The 12th Century (please read further in the article which casts doubt on the antiquity) temple dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva in the form of Vaidyanatheshwara (Literally meaning Medical Doctor) in the form of snake, is situated on the bank of River Shimsa, a tributary of River Kaveri.

Legend as explained to us by the locals and also supplemented by Shri Shanmukahsundara Deekshit (the Archaka of the temple) has it that a cow at a particular time everyday used to visit an Anthill below a Bilva Tree, release milk on it from her udder as if it was performing Abhisheka. The Villagers began noticing this strange phenomenon with awe and being devout worshippers of God, began performing Milk Abhisheka themselves regularly. One auspicious day, Bhagwan Shiva appeared in the dreams of the village chieftain that He was pleased with the worship and indicated that he was residing inside this anthill. At appropriate He promised that He will appear in the open and will cure illness of all devotees, especially those who suffer from illness of skin, who sincerely worship Him in this temple. It was those days when there was no formal doctors and it was elders with their experience and limited knowledge of herbs and roots who treated the sick.

On a heavy rainy day, the Anthill disintegrated and as promised by Bhagwan Shiva He emerged from within, in the form of Shiva Linga. There is another version that the sentries of the reigning king broke the anthill and a bleeding Shiva Linga emerged. Either way, the Deity here is a Swayambhu (Self-Manifested).

Over a period of time a temple was built around this Anthill and Shiv Linga and worship continued. According the locals, based on Archaka family’s word of mouth, this Shiva Linga has been worshipped for more than 2000 years in the same place, which is quite credible. It the temple built around it that maybe of later period, based on the architecture which is distinctly of Ganga-Nolamba period, making it about 900 years old.

Worship of Bhagwan Shiva continued and it was said that anyone falling sick, even those terminally sick, visit the temple on four Mondays, take bath in the Shimsa river and wearing wet clothes, offer prayers to the Lord by offering Archana and Abhisheka sevas. On culmination of the sevas, Bhakta will be given sand from the Anthill & herbs and roots as prasad which mix in the drinking water and consume. The belief is that the divine energy of the sand from Anthill turns this concoction into a divine medicine curing the diseases.

Considering other temples of the era, this temple is not that large but follows typical architectural characteristics of Ganga Architecture – A Navaranga (main assembly hall) leading to a Sabha Mantapa (assembly hall) and then Mukti Mantapa (hall of learning, especially where Vedas or other scriptures are learnt) before leading to Garbha Griha (Sanctum sanctorum). The Navaranga in Shri Vaidyantha Gudi has 4 ornate pillars that divides this square into Nine areas (Nava = Nine; Aranga = arena/stage). Garbha griha has Shiva Linga seated under a seven hooded snake raising its hood serving as a shelter to the head of the Shiva.

Another unique feature in this temple is Nandi’s position. The Divine Bull, Nandi is situated on the left hand side of the Deity so that devotees view are not blocked. Generally Nandi is located right in front of Bhagwan Shiva. It is believed that there still lives a Serprent inside the sanctum sanctorum that energizes the pratishta but also offers protection to all Devotees who offer prescribed sevas sincerely.

The Main Assembly Hall (Navaranga) has many Deities – prominent among them Shri Ganesha, Shri Lakshmi, Shri Saraswati, Shri Shanmukha, Shri Bhairava and two Shiva Lingas – Edahari (spout of Linga towars left) known as Shri Pataleshwara and Balahari (spout of Linga towards right) known as Shri Maruleshwara. A disputed fact is the murti of Parasurama. Though everyone believes and many of online literature found and Archaka also endorsing it saying it is Parashurama. However archeological records and the iconography indicates it is most likely to be Shri Harihara. Author humbly submits that this assertion could be wrong too.

Vishwakarma of India’s Skill Development: Dr. Reguraj’s Legacy

Dr. Reguraj didn’t just lead NTTF but laid firm and strong foundation that engineered its future. His 57 year tenure was defined by a future-first philosophy, transforming the institution into a powerhouse of technical skilling.

The Visionary Architect: Building Foundations for the Future.

Dr. Reguraj’s leadership was never about maintaining the status quo. It was about pathbreaking and unconventional foresight. He understood that for India to thrive, its workforce needed to be atleast decades ahead of then industry standards. Today, NTTF stands on the bedrock of his trailblazing initiatives.

1984: Mechatronics Revolution: Decades Ahead of the Curve.

In 1984, the year when Electronics City campus was launched,  the term Mechatronics was virtually unheard in the Indian industrial landscape. Dr. Reguraj saw the convergence of mechanical and electronics engineering long before the market did.

  • Bold Pivot: Facing a market unready for the terminology, Mechatronics, he strategically renamed the course to Electronics. Each one of the 1st batch were picked up like hotcakes by the industry with a huge salary differential, in some cases at par with Engineers from India’s premier Technical Institutions, a bunch of youngster who not only “knew”, but also had ability “to do”.
  • Computer-related programs: Notwithstanding internal scepticism and to ensure student employability, all while keeping the core interdisciplinary curriculum intact, he launched Computer and IT related programs outside the main campuses. Proved its worth in the market and then was integrated into the main campuses. Today almost every centre delivers this program which has significantly high amount of takers.
  • Full Circle: Proving his original vision right, NTTF later reintroduced Mechatronics by name becoming the first in India to do so. Today, it remains a marquee program and the gold standard in the skilling domain and has highest enrolment in NTTF.

Learn and Earn Revolution: India’s First Dual System of Education.

Dr. Reguraj was mastermind behind a revolutionary approach that introduced the Dual System of Education to India. Recognizing that classroom settings often lagged behind rapid pace of factory floors, he bridged the gap by allowing trainees to split their time between the institute and the industry.

  • Model with a Difference: It was not just an internship. It was a structured pedagogical shift where theoretical concepts were learnt and immediately implemented and tested by practice in real-world manufacturing environments.
  • Unprecedented success: Acceptability and popularity of this model was unprecedented, offering students financial independence through stipends while they mastered high-end technical skills in the industry.
  • Impact:  The success of this model is best measured by its scale today. Nearly two-thirds of NTTF’s current trainees are enrolled in this model, proving that his blueprint for “hands-on” education remains  most effective solution for India’s skilling challenges.

Beyond Engineering-SPG: Transforming Engineers into Industrial Architects

Dr. Reguraj conceptualized School of Postgraduate Studies (PG School) in 1983 to address a specific structural gap observed in Indian engineering landscape. While NTTF was already famous for its diploma programs, Reguraj realized that the industry was facing a specialization vacuum at the higher echelons of engineering.

  • Industry Ready Engineers: India was producing many general engineering graduates, but lacked specialized production engineering talent. Tool Engineering was not being taught as an organized discipline. He conceptualized PG School to transform general engineers into specialized “Industry-Ready” professionals.
  • Indigenous Tooling Infrastructure: As a founder of the Tool and Gauge Manufacturers Association of India (TAGMA), he understood that high-quality manufacturing requires high-quality tools, dies, and moldswich also means creation of a steady pipeline of skilled tool designers who could handle the complexities of precision manufacturing, which was essential for India to reduce its dependence on imported tooling.
  • Practical knowledge with Theory: He conceptualized PG School not as a traditional academic environment, but as a place where:
    • Real-time tool-making was central to the curriculum.
    • Industry-institute partnership was baseline, ensuring that what students learned on Day 1 could be applied in a factory the next day.

Redefining Plant Engineering (2014-15): Engineering “Complete” Specialist.

While others focused on narrow specialization, Dr. Reguraj introduced Plant Engineering at a time when the concept was considered unthinkable.

  • Concept: A holistic curriculum designed to produce experts who could design, operate, and maintain entire manufacturing plants.
  • Multi-Skilled Edge: By integrating Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, and Control Engineering into a single discipline, he created a new breed of “Super-Engineers” vital for the modern industrial era.

  • Rural Quota: While the nation only heard of quota based on Caste, Religion, Region, Language, Dr Reguraj saw a clear Urban-Rural divide in education. He earmarked 50% of available seats in NTTF for candidates from Rural Schools
  • Women Empowerment: Dr Reguraj ensured by his leadership and prescription that it was not merely a slogan. He injected a sense of equality into everyone who walked the corridors of NTTF that if anyone can do it, our women can do it too. Compared to other Institutions, NTTF today has significant percentage of Women across all sections (Trainees, Faculty, Admin Staff)
  • Empowering the Differently-Abled: He pioneered specialized initiatives for Polio-affected individuals, creating pathways to self-reliance.
  • Breaking Barriers: His vision expanded to include comprehensive programs for the Hearing and Speech impaired, as well as those with lower locomotor disabilities, proving that skill knows no physical boundaries.

The “NTTF Way” is a direct reflection of Dr. Reguraj’s grit. His ability to stand firm against opposition to protect a visionary idea is why thousands of graduates are industry leaders today.
