Guru Purnima or Vyasa Purnima is celebrated on the Purnima Tithi (Full Moon Day) of Hindu Lunar month Ashadha (June/July). It is also called Vyasa Purnima as it the day Maharshi Veda Vyasa (Grandson of Maharshi Vashishta) was born to Maharshi Shakti and Satyavati. Maharshi Veda Vyasa is the composer of the Epic Srimad Mahabharata and is also the great soul who classified Vedas into Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva which is the reason why he is given the Title of Veda Vyasa).

The Supreme knowledge that was being passed on orally from the memory of the great Masters was for the first time compiled and written down by Maharishi Veda Vyasa. He had retired to a secluded place, inaccessible even to his closest disciples, and entered into deepest possible state of meditation. From that space of consciousness, he wrote down the great teachings of the Saints of yesteryugas. After recording the Supreme Knowledge on Bhoja Patra (Birch Tree bark and leaves), Maharishi Veda Vyasa emerged out and appeared to his disciples on this auspicious day of Ashada Purnima. Hence, this day is dedicated and celebrated by Spiritual Seekers as Vyasa Purnima.

The Legend(s)

According to Shaiva Hindu beliefs, Guru Purnima is the day when Bhagwan Shiva transferred his knowledge to “Sapatarishis”. Shiva thus is considered as the First Guru. Guru Purnima is dedicated to Shiva, his valuable teachings, and the Sapta Rishis. There is an interesting background story to this.

Long long ago, Bhagwan Shiva as Adiyogi appeared in the Himalayas laucnhed Himself into intense ecstatic dance (Ananda Tandava) on the mountains. It was very obvious to all observers that something was happening to Adi Yogi and to everyone witnessing that no one had known ever before. Everyone gathered around Him wanting to know more about it but the energy exuded was like a raging fire that no one dared to go near Him. All of them waited and waited and days became week and years. Many of them began leaving the place one by one and finally only Seven of them stayed back patiently. They were insistent and persistent that they had to learn from Adiyogi and began their penance. After 84 years Shiva relents and on the Full moon Day of Ashadha month, he decides to become Guru and impart the knowledge to the seven sadhaks which goes on and one for many yugas. Thus Shiva became the 1st Guru and by the time the knowledge was completed imparted Seven persons who received it got enlighteed and becamse Sapta Rishis.

According to Vaishnava Hindu beliefs, Maharshi Veda Vyasa was the divine incarnation of Lord Vishnu and was born on this day which is celebrated later as Guru Purnima or Vyasa Purnima. The day was earmarked to symbolically honour and respect all Gurus and teachers who have taught us the Vidya. It is also said to be the day Maharshi Veda Vyasa commenced his work on Brahma-Sutras.

Maharshi Veda Vyasa Instructing Brahma Gnana to the Disciples

Vaishnava Hindus especially the followers of Dwaita Philosophy regard Maharshi Veda Vyasa, whose powers and knowledge are unsurpassed, as the Aadi Guru, greatest of all Gurus, Guru of Gurus.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji on Guru Purnima

Guru Purnima is the day when the disciple wakes up in his fullness and in the wakefulness he can’t be but grateful. This gratitude is not of dwaita (you and me), but of advaita. It is not a river moving from somewhere to somewhere, but is the ocean moving within itself. So, gratefulness on Guru-Purnima symbolizes that fullness.

Guru Purnima is widely believed to be the day of Master or Guru. The Art of Living founder, Pujya Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji says, that it is the day of the DEVOTEE. Devotee differentiated with a student who goes through education and collect information. Information, however, is not knowledge; it is not wisdom.

Gurudev says, “A devotee is not there for wisdom only. He is simply rejoicing in love. He has fallen deeply in love with the Master, with Infinity, with God. He doesn’t care as to whether he gets enlightened or not. He doesn’t care as to whether he acquires a lot of wisdom or not because every moment he is immersed in divine love: That is enough for him. A devotee is difficult to find. Students, there are in abundance, disciples are a few, but devotees are rare”

“Everything is God, who is present in everything, so it is great to become a devotee. Everything, whether you want it or not, is already God, but when love and devotion has flowered in you totally, you become a devotee. Attraction is everywhere, love is somewhere, but devotion is rare. Devotion is beautiful. A student comes to the Master with tears in his eyes. There is so much pain and when he leaves, he is carrying the same tears, but the quality of the tears is different, they are of gratitude, of love. Entire creation is longing for only one thing, the transformation from salty tears to sweet tears”

The Buddha’s disciple Sariputra, got enlightened. The Buddha told him, “Now go ahead, go into the world and preach, teach and do the same work I do. Carry on my work”. Now Sariputra left, but he was crying and people asked him, “Why are you crying when you are enlightened?” He said, “Who cares about enlightenment, it could have waited, I would have waited. I didn’t even bother about it or ask for it because the joy of being at the feet of the Buddha was so great. Being a devotee was so great, now I am missing it. I would have preferred that to enlightenment”.

When Krishna was leaving his body, he spoke to his friend Uddhava with tears in his eyes. “These Gopis are so beautiful and I cannot bear the amount of devotion they have for me. Go and tell my devotees that only they can free me of their gratitude and of their love”. He rejoices, “Go tell them that where my devotees sing, I am right there”. Love is something that even the Divine rejoices in. Infinity longs for you as much as you long for it. It is waiting to receive you. God is as anxious as you are to be close. So when a devotee flowers on this planet, God is happy.

These two examples sums up why Gurupurnima is the day of the devotee.

Ever Grateful to my Master, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji, who plays the Usher at the door, nudging us to stumble into Infinity. The world is a beautiful place every since we set out in this path under His guidance. If you don’t believe it see it through our eyes. When there were times when we felt like giving up on the big bad world, He empowered us with positivity and knowledge to realise that that it is for us to make sure either we transform the world or change our perception.

For a seeker, Guru Purnima is a day of significance, is a day of New Year. It is the day to review one’s progress on the spiritual path and renew one’s determination and focus on the goal, and to resolve what one wants to do in the coming year. As the full moon rises and sets, tears of gratitude arise and repose into the vastness of one’s own self.”

Our Guru Purnima is usually with Satsangs in Temples, after the morning Guru Puja (Expressing our Gratefulness to the Guru Parampara). Generally at least two of them that leaves in awe of the day

ध्यानमूलं गुरुर्मूर्तिः, पूजामूलं गुरुर्पदम् ।
मन्त्रमूलं गुरुर्वाक्यं, मोक्षमूलं गुरूर्कृपा

Dhyanamoolam Guru Murti, Pujamoolam Guru Padam
Mantra Moolam Guru Vakyam, Moksha Moolam Guru Kripa

Root of Meditation is Guru’s form, Root of worship is of the Guru’s feet. The basis of all mantras is the words of the Guru. The bestowal of liberation is only through Guru’s grace.

International Day of Yoga – The Background

Dignitaries Light the Lamp to get the Summit Going – Deepam Karoti Kalyanam

It was a chilly wintry Sunday morning on 4th December 2011, when prominent Yogis of Bharat and some from abroad assembled in the picturesque, The Art of Living International Ashram, in Bengaluru for the 1st day of Yoga: A Science for World Peace, organised jointly by The Art of Living, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (S-VYASA) and Portuguese Yoga Confedaration under the leadership of Pujya Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ji.

For an ordinary seeker like me, it was goosebump moments just to be in the presence of virtual who’s who of the Yoga World. Imagine the energy exuded from the stage above when you have Yoga Shiromani Padma Vibhushan Shri Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar (Popularly known as BKS), Padma Bhushan Sri Sri Sri Balagangadharnath Swamiji of Adi Chunchanagiri Mutt, Swami Paramatmananda-General Secretary of Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha, Swami Baba Ramdev of Patanjali Yogpeeth, Yogarshi Subodh Tiwari of Keivalyadhama Yoga Institute, Padmashri Dr. Nagendra – Chancellor S-VYASA, Karpadi Siddalingeshwara Swamiji of Yogavana Betta, Jagat Guru Amrta Suryananda Maha Raj-President of Portuguese Yoga Confederation, Dr. Ramesh Bijlani of Aurobindo Ashram, Swami Radanath of ISKCON and others

News item – Deccan Herald – 5th December 2011
Note the pen in Pujya Gurudev Sri Sri’s hands (scroll down to the end why I mentioned specifically)

Yogis and delegates deliberated over a period of 2 days to evolve plans to standardize yoga education while allowing the flexibility for innovations and classical contributions of Yoga Gurus and Yoga Schools. It was felt by the delegates that the standardisation is a must to ensure consistency of delivery, evaluation and improving practice and teaching of Yoga, which then can become an objective tool for value-based education and a catalyst for social transformation and facilitate the use of yoga as a performance enhancer and stress buster..

Yoga today has become an integral part of wellness strategy and agnostic to race, nationality and ethnicity. In recent years, medical researchers are exploring therapeutic benefits of yoga. There are compelling evidences to use yoga as a lifestyle intervention for stress and lifestyle related psychosomatic diseases. Presentations during the summit, on basic research on yoga has also made out that yoga facilitates scholastic and occupational performance in children and adults respectively.

On the 1st day of the summit, Shri BKS Iyengar moved the following proclamation (see picture below for the exact resolution)

The UN Resolution

In his opening address of the 69th session(click on the link for full text) of the General Assembly, Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi mooted the proposal saying, “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, a holistic approach that is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.

With the above address of Prime Ministet as background, on December 11th 2014, United Nations and the UNESCO resolved to observe June 21st as International Day of Yoga, and the resolution was passed by the UN General Assembly with a whopping majority of 175 Countries, the biggest majority for any of the resolutions in the History of United Nations.

As the resolution notes, “the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health.” In this regard, the World Health Organization has also urged its member states to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity, which is among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide, and a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes.

As United Nations says, Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. No denying Yoga is very much Hindu system (which inherently is Secular) and Sanatana Dharma’s faith agnostic contribution to Humanity

Shri Garbharakshambika – Protector of Creation

Locally known as Garbharakshambigai, she is an incarnation of Maa Parvati. The temple located in Thirukkarugavur in Thanjavur District (Click on this link for location) is first of the Pancharanya (5 forest) temple of the circuit to be worshipped. It is located on the banks of River Vennaaru and is a Padal Petra Sthalams (out of 276) and 18th one in the South of River Kaveri. (You can find links to other 4 Pancharanya Sthalams towards the end of this article). Thirukkarugavur is located close to Papanasaam (around 3kms from Papanasam Railway Station) in Tanjavur District of Tamil Nadu

Shri Garbharakshambigai and Shri Mullaivanathar Temple

The Temple

The presiding deities of the temple are Shri Garbharakshambigai (Maa Parvati) and Shri Mullaivananathar (Bhagwan Shiva). The temple has 5 tiered Rajagopuram and an outer Prakaram. Cholas built this temple in the 7th Century and the architecture is typically Dravidian Style. It finds mentions in Thevarams composed by Saint Poets Nayanmars. The temple has 31 inscriptions dating from the Chola period from the reigns of Koperi Varman, Rajaraja I, Rajendra Chola I and Kulothunga Chola.

Shri Mullaivananathar Rajagopuram
, Teertham and Sthalavruksham

In the days of yore, this place was a forest of jasmine – (thus part of the pancharanya sthalams). and Bhagwan Shiva self manifested (Swayambhu – one of the 64 Swayambhu Lingas) as a Lingam in this Mullaivanam (Mullai-Jasmine and Vanam-Forest) with a Jasmine Creeper around the Linga and hence came to be known as Shri Mullaivananathar.

Sthala Vruksha-Jasmine (Mullai)

Another unique feature is that the Shivalinga here is of Ant-hill mud and hence there is no Traditional Abhishekams performed as in other Shiva Kshetras. The only seva is Punugu (Civet) dharanam to the Deity. It is said that those with Skin Ailments or other Chronic illness would get relieved of the same when they worship Shri Mullaivananathar by offering Punugu Paste.

The more famous and much sought after Deity here is Shri Mullaivananathar’s consort Maa Parvati as Shri Garbha Rakshambigai, which literally means protector of womb or foetus. In Tamizh, She is also referred to as Karukaathanayagiambal (Karu = Womb/Foetus; Kaattha = Protected). The name of the town, Thirukarukavur is also derived from the same. It is also known by the name Madhavipuram (Madhavi means flowering creeper) and also as Garbhapuri.

The main Deity Shri Garbharakshambigai is life-size and at 7 feet tall, She looks lively. She has assumed standing posture with her left hand supporting the hip (womb) and right hand in Abhaya Hasta Mudra. Her attractive and soothing smile provides a ray of hope to all those devotee who come to seek Her blessings.

The Legend

Long ago there lived Rishi Nidhruva along with his wife Vedika serving Maharshis Gautama and Garga, who were performing their penance in the Ashram in Mullaivanam. Everything was fine with the couple except that they were childless and Maharishis sensed this regret they had in the couples’ lives. They advised the couple to perform puja to Mahadeva Shiva for 48 days. Since it was a dense forest of Jasmine creepers, there were no Shiva Linga or any temple in the vicinity and they go looking for it. They find an Anthill with Jasmine creepers encircling it. They deemed it as a Shiva Linga and called it Mullaivananathar (Ruler of Jasmine Forest). Along with their service to the Maharshis they continued their sincere prayers to their beloved Shri Mullaivananathar for 48 days and Vedika attains Garbha (pregnancy). Their happiness knew no bounds and they eagerly awaited birth of their child.

In the meanwhile, upon invited by Varuna (God of Rains) for conduct of a Yagna, Nidhruva traveled through skies to Varuna Rajya for performing the Yagna leaving his wife, Vedika alone, notwithstanding that she was in an advance stage of pregnancy. Rishi Urdhvapada on his travel arrives at Vedika’s Kuteer (hut) in Mullaivanam, seeking alms. After the day’s chores, heavily pregnant Vedika was resting inside and did not hear Rishi Urdhavapada’s call. Assuming that she was deliberately ignoring him and considering it an insult, he curses Vedika to fall sick. This resulted in degeneration of the foetus and Vedika undergoes abortion. She was devastated and pleads with Maa Parvati (consort of Shri Mullaivananathar). She appears before Her devotee and collects incomplete foetus in a Kalasha (pot) protects it until it finally develops into a healthy and beautiful male boy, which was presented back to Vedika. The boy was named Naidhurva. Since Maa Parvati protected the foetus and saved it, she came to be known as Shri Garbharakshambigai (or Karukaathanayagiambal).

Since Vedika was unable to feed milk to the baby, Garbharakshambigai asks the Celestial cow Kamadhenu to provide milk to the baby for nourishment. Kamadhenu stomps on the ground and a milk pond gets created (another version is that Kamadhenu digs her horn deep into the ground to create a milk pond). This milk pond is what is currently the temple pond, or Pushkarni and called Ksheerakundam (Milk Pond).

Ksheerakundam – Pushkarini (Temple Pond)

Nidhruva returns from the yagna and hears the story of how Maa Parvati protected his child, he was overwhelmed and along with Vedika and Naidhurva, visit Mahadeva and Maa Parvati to express their gratitude. The Divine couple accept their prayers and offer them a boon. Selfless couple that they were Nidhruva and Vedika, they sought Shiva and Parvati to stay here in Mullaivanam as Shri Garbharakshambigai and Shri Mullaivanathar and continue to bless childless couples who worship here and bless them with a progeny, protect the womb of pregnant ladies, for all generations to come. Divine couple agree to this plea and they make Thirukarukavur their abode and continue to bless all devotees who visit them here.

This legend has been reproduced beautifully on the mural in the temple premises

Thereafter the Archaka will give ghee to the couple as prasadam that would be taken home. The same is mixed with 1/2 kg of pure cow ghee and both will consume the same at bed time for 48 days. It shall be skipped for 5 days during menstruation and continued to complete 48 days.

Though we could not make it to this temple during our pilgrimage to Thirukarukavur, a person in Kumbakonam related the story of this temple and indicated that it is also important to visit Karuvalarchery Shri Karuvalarakkumnayagi Shri Akhilandeshwari Amman (Click on the link for location) Temple along with Thirukarukavur Shri Garbharakshambigai Temple

Akhilandeshwari Devi is known here as Karuvalarakkum Nayagi, meaning the one who blesses the devotee for good and healthy growth of the Foetus. Our Experience

We were traveling towards Kumbakonam on our regular Temple Pligrimage last August when a friend suggested that we also visit this amazing temple and pray since our daughter was carrying (she delivered a healthy baby boy making us proud grandparents last October). She used the Castor oil prasadam during her labor.

Since we were going there we also informed our daughter, who asked us to take a vow on her friend’s behalf who had repeated instanced of miscarriages. Finally after taking a vow she conceived and delivered a healthy baby girl (last week). Apart from 2 other known examples, this makes it 3rd instance where a devotee delivered a baby after the best of doctors gave up. Sometime belief moves the mountain and nature finds its way to conspire and make humans happy.

Please share this information with those in need or for good karma. Even without any problem a darshan of Shri Garbharakshambigai and Shri Mullaivanathar is bliss and in any case this temple is a great architectural treasure and a masterpiece of art.
