Acknowledgment Upfront
This article is again based on my notes taken during insightful discussions on this profound wisdom by Shri Vinod Menon ji, senior teacher of Art of Living and my TTC trainer during those old memorable days when seekers huddled in his quarters at Athreya, enjoying exotic Satvik food while absorbing timeless lessons.
The Infinite and the Form
Connecting with Guru is pure matter of heart. Divine Master represents infinite consciousness, unbound by physical boundaries or human limitations. Seekers hold full liberty to establish personal, boundless bond with Guru through love, surrender, and devotion. In this sacred space, no rigid framework exists, only silent conversation between seeker and eternal source.
Finite human mind, however, struggles to grasp purely abstract infinite without medium. Organisation founded by Guru serves as essential bridge. It manifests divine vision into physical realm, allowing ordinary seekers to connect, participate, and serve.
Heart versus Head in Spiritual Journey
Relationship with Guru belongs to realm of heart. It operates on total trust, spontaneous joy, and emotional liberation. You take complete liberty in loving your Guru because divine connection requires no approval, protocol, or structural permission.
Engaging with Organisation, on other hand, demands application of head. Organisation manages scale, resources, event logistics, and community coordination. It must operate through strict rules, transparent regulations, clear roles, and defined hierarchy to maintain order. Taking informal liberties with structured body creates chaos, misdirection, and administrative inefficiency.
Reversing the Sacred Equation
Most sadhaks fall into subtle trap by operating in exact reverse manner. In relationship with Guru, seeker brings mental calculations, hesitation, rigid protocols, and constant self-doubt. Instead of offering unreserved heart, seeker measures devotion through external rules and intellectual analysis.
Conversely, when dealing with Organisation, seeker tries to take informal liberties, expecting administrative structure to bend around personal preferences, emotional whims, or boundaryless informality.
Cause of Spiritual Disappointment
This tragic reversal leads directly to deep frustration. By bringing rigid mind to Guru and loose boundaries to Organisation, seeker misaligns head and heart. Expecting institutional machinery to offer boundless personal freedom results in inevitable disappointment. When administrative friction arises, frustrated seeker ends up blaming leadership, fellow volunteers, structure, and system itself, failing to recognize fundamental category error committed within own approach.
Harmonies of Serving Through Structure
Understanding this distinction removes unnecessary friction for seeker. One must not expect administrative structure to mirror boundless informality of Guru, nor expect Guru to be constrained by rules of institution.
Seeker uses head to respect hierarchy, uphold discipline, and honor commitments within Organisation. Simultaneously, seeker keeps heart anchored exclusively on Guru. When rules of institution are navigated with head while devotion to Master flourishes in heart, seeker transforms mundane organizational service into pure spiritual discipline.
