Legend associated with Rama Ekadashi

Scriptures describe sacred story narrated by Bhagawan Krishna to King Yudhishthira, involving pious King Muchukunda and his daughter Chandrabhati. King Muchukunda was great ruler, deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu, and strictly observed religious fasts in his kingdom. His daughter Chandrabhati was married to Prince Shobhana, son of King Chandrasena. Prince Shobhana was physically weak and suffered from health issues.

During one visit to kingdom of King Muchukunda, Rama Ekadashi arrived. As per royal law of kingdom, every human being, animal, and bird had to strictly observe fast on Ekadashi without taking food or water. Prince Shobhana became worried because his weak body could not tolerate severe hunger, yet he could not break royal law. His wife Chandrabhati advised him to observe fast with complete faith in Bhagawan Vishnu.

Prince Shobhana observed strict fast along with everyone on Rama Ekadashi, but due to severe hunger and weakness, he died during night. Grieving family performed his last rites, and Chandrabhati continued living at her father home, constantly praying to Bhagawan Vishnu. Due to immense spiritual merit earned by observing Rama Ekadashi fast, Prince Shobhana attained glorious divine kingdom on Mandarachala mountain in next birth, complete with heavenly comforts and wealth. However, his kingdom remained temporary due to weak health during fast.

One day, Brahmin named Somasharma from kingdom of King Muchukunda visited Mandarachala mountain during pilgrimage and recognized Prince Shobhana sitting on golden throne. Shobhana narrated how Rama Ekadashi fast granted him divine kingdom and requested Brahmin to inform Chandrabhati. Brahmin returned and narrated entire event to Chandrabhati. Hearing this news, Chandrabhati, who had observed every Ekadashi fast since childhood, visited Mandarachala mountain. She transferred spiritual merit of all her lifelong Ekadashi fasts to her husband. By divine grace of Shri Hari and accumulated virtue of Chandrabhati, kingdom of Shobhana became eternal, and couple lived happily together in divine bliss.
